Trying to Break Into the Big Time…

wedding video MelbourneBeing an amateur videographer trying to break into the big-time is gruelling, particularly since people tend to want really big stuff filmed and won’t give you a second glance. I’ve lucked out once in my career so far, and that was because my sister was really chill about me filming her wedding and didn’t want to pay for an actual Melbourne wedding videographer. It might be because they spent too much on the flowers- the walkways were coated in a carpet of iceberg roses, and it was way OTT – but it made for some interesting filming. I just focused on them and it made for a pretty interesting scene, I guess. And Sandra said I did a great job, so that’s something.

Still, it’s been pretty dry since then, because I’m not a ‘registered business’ or whatever and people don’t want what I’m selling. I’ve got a highlight reel and everything, but people are just like ‘no thanks, come back with a million dollar camera and a five-man crew’. I guess I could get some friends together, but they’re all on the same level as me, so that might just make it worse.

I stay up to date really well with the big stuff that might need filming, though. Like, I follow all the videography Tweeter accounts and that’s where I get most of my opportunities. There was a huge one recently, with Lawrence Corp having a big fancy corporate event in Flemington Gardens. I thought I’d try my hand at asking if they needed someone to film, but apparently it was closed. Like, really closed. No one was even allowed near the giant tent. Shame, because Lawrence Corp is big news right now and I though the fact that they’re fresh and up-and-coming meant that they’d take on an amateur corporate videographer. Melbourne has too much competition going. Maybe I should try the country…
